yo tengo hambre.

i am embarking on a journey. a "let's see if i can change my eating habits" journey b/c i've recently realized that i don't eat as well as i should. i know i'm lacking in the protein department due to my fishetarianism, and i tend to skip meals alot because i'm busy. and lazy. i hate to cook for myself. and then at night i load up on carbs b/c i'm so hungry! it's a vicious cycle. i love mac 'n cheese. my famous tag line is "i eat pizza 3 out of the 7 nights of the week". and that is, scarily enough, usually true! yowza.

i am trying to do a sort of variation on the south beach diet (urgh, i hate the word "diet" b/c i'm not really trying to lose weight - i just feel sluggish & gross all the time - not necessarily chunky monkey. really mom, i'm eating, i swear! haha.). today was my first day and it sucked. i really want a cookie or some bread right now. ohmigosh - i AM a carb addict!!!

i've read several places that people carb load because they think it gives them energy, but that actually protein is pretty important (more important) to energy levels as well. i am always tired. it sucks. granted, some of this has to do w/ my wack sleep schedule as well, but i'm sure that my eating habits don't help...

the other thing that i'm not going to be able to do is DRINK BEER. holy crap, that's going to be tough. a beer & a show are like peas & carrots to me! but now it's hello aquafina, goodbye fat tire! haha.

we'll see how i feel in a week or so, but right now i'm starvin' marvin. i also haven't been to the grocery store, so i have NOTHING in my house to even snack on that is good for me. oh wait! i have string cheese - SCORE! wow, i don't think i've ever been this excited about string cheese before in my entire life! i have to go eat now.

the theory of (marietta) relativity.

this post has nothing to do with the theory of relativity. but it DOES have to do with the fact that marietta, ohio is a blackhole from which it's citizens will never escape. no matter where they move, there will ALWAYS be other mariettans just around the corner (literally).

a few months ago my friend jessica informed me that our friend meera, who had been in the peace corps for the past couple of years, had moved to san francisco. i wondered where she lived in the city and found out that she lives FOUR BLOCKS AWAY from me! wtf? how does that even happen?

so, saturday night, i gussied (yes, gussied) myself up and made my way to meera's house, braving the ginormous hill that is nob to get there in 3 inch heels. hey, i had to look cute! beauty is pain. haha. it was a socialite party afterall...

marietta connection in full effect.

most of the people at the party could not get over the fact that meera, eric, kristin, & i all went to not only high school together, but middle school, and even elementary school (eric & i). it is kind of crazy when you think about it, because marighetto is so freakin' tiny! what can i say, we mid-ohio valley kids have wanderlust!

in another strange turn of events, i found out that meera is dating my friend AJ's brother ian - hello! so weird. san francisco isn't THAT small for jebsus' sake!!!

photos from the madness are here.

note to self.

*stick to blogging about music. and only about music.

__________

thursday night i met willo, john, and willo's friend sam and his brother charles @ the great american music hall for the highly anticipated (well, highly anticipated to ME) supergrass show - SUP-ER-GRASS! ahhh, i love them and have wanted to see them for probably close to ten years. yowza.

let me just say that they RAWKED. w00t w00t! i was curious to see if they'd put on a good show, and i had heard from many people that they were tons of fun to see, but you never know - especially as bands get up there in the years...sometimes they get rusty. i ain't sayin, i'm just sayin'...

gaz's vocals were spot-on and i was psyched that they actually played alot of their older stuff - they were super-energetic & seemingly appreciative and total rawk stars - man, i love them!

the opening band, pilotdrift, was interesting as well. they kind of reminded me of radiohead (ok computer/kid a era) - lots of harmonized vocals, and by vocals i really mean lots of verses with "aaaaaaahhhs" and "oooooooohs" at the end. does that make sense?!? or maybe neutral milk hotel? i guess it doesn't really matter what they sound like, but they totally grew on me as their set went on and i really liked how it seemed like the music-making was a completely cooperative/collaborative effort between all five dudes in the band. it was borderline jammy, but not in an annoying way. they ended their last song with a freakin' wall of percussion - every member of the band was playing a different percussive (?) instrument and it RULED. and the guitarist played an SG, so he obviously knows what's up . haha.

__________

last night w, ted, john, and i went to the wedding present/tim fite show @ slim's and i would just like take a moment to propose a toast to the healing powers of rock 'n roll music. okay, i'm done. on with the rock -

tim fite is a fantastical, kooky, nut-job awesome person. haha. he eff'n rocks and it was honestly probably one of the most entertaining sets i have ever seen in my life. that dude is uber-creative & crazy. during the set, he had a backdrop of himself playing along to the songs with illustrated lyrical flourishs interspursed and finger-counting interludes between songs (i know, it makes no sense, it's just one of those "you had to be there" things!) i was literally grinning ear to ear the whole time & trying to contain my laughter - it's not that the songs weren't great (b/c they were) or that he was funny (which, he kind of was, but in a completely, "oh my god i can't believe how effing awesome this is" sort of way), it was just so freakin' COOL. yeah, cool. and he eff'n rocked the mic while wearing a searsucker suit & SUSPENDERS. hells to the yeah. :)

in between sets he came by to do a station id for ted, and willo & i were like "tim fite!!! you RULE!!!" hahaha. i think he was a little scared.

the wedding present were kick ass as well - for the most part a really energetic set, apart from a mellow cover of "falling" (previously recorded by julee cruise) - if you are a twin peaks dork like myself then you know what song i'm talking about. hi, DORKS UNITE!

it was so awesome to be @ the show with ted, who is a wedding present freak, and who told me the most awesomest "...and that's how we met" story about he & misty. and the wedding present. i want a story like that!!!

i was also made aware of the fact that i was 7 years old when the wedding present released their first album. um, yeah. i love it that some people are so committed to music that they rock out continually for 20 years and show no signs of stopping. to me that is an inspiration - yaaaaay music!!!

and now i have to go get all socialited up for meera's "snob hill soiree". ta ta dahlings, and have a loverly evening....

weekend update.

saturday night i went out with a gaggle of my b.reps coworkers. i accidently fell asleep on my couch and didn't wake up until 11:00, when the party peeps called me to find out where the heck i was - oops. amazingly enough, i got ready & made it over to toronado before midnight, but the party had moved over to another bar in the neighborhood, an bodhran, so we peaced out of toronado to join the rest of the crew at the other bar...

elaina, kyle, & i at an bodhran!

because i was about 5 or 6 drinks behind everyone it was highly entertaining - retail folks are crazy!!! haha. one of the bartenders there, rory, was super-friendly & super-cute. and super-irish. i might have to go back. ahem, what is it w/ drooling over cute bartenders lately? (see: the hemlock a few weeks ago.) anyhoots, the rest of the photos of the night are here.

sunday morning i woke up at 8:30 for some reason, despite not getting home until 2:00 am...wtf. while i waited for willo & her little sis haylie, who was visiting from colorado, i went out & grabbed some coffee & called my parents. i don't think i've ever voluntarily woken up that early on a sunday in my entire life. wtf.

after willo & haylie picked me up we headed over to the east bay to meet up with trevor & his gf ana for brunch at the thai temple. it was soooo yummy delicious! and all the profits go to support the temple, so it's good eats that make you feel good about yourself too. yay.

flea market finds!

after brunch we headed over to the ashby flea market and then made the trek to the albany bulb....the bulb is a former trash dump that was covered over with dirt over 20 years ago and has since been adopted by artists & hippie-commune people, who over the years have reconfigured found pieces of "trash" into sculptures and have painted gigantic wooden canvases in the outdoor art gallery. it has also been controversial because apparently the local government wants to turn it into a more manicured city park and there are even rumours that they want to build a bed, bath, & beyond (or some similar home furnishings outlet) close by and gentrify the whole area. boooooooooo!!!

at the albany bulb.

trevor was an awesome tour guide & took us to all the 'hot spots' on the bulb - the art gallery, the ampitheathre/fit pit, and the castle. it was really amazing & really fantastic. photos from the thai temple/bulb extravaganza here.

after our east bay adventure, willo, haylie, & i decided that we needed ice cream - because there is nothing better than ice cream on a cold february day....or something?!? c'mon, everything is made better with a footnote of ice cream goodness.

man, i swear i did more activity on a sunday than i had in about five months - and since i woke up at an ungodly hour i promptly headed home for a much-needed nap. but a kick ass sunday through & through! wheeeeeeee.

okay, time for bed. goodnight & have a pleasant tomorrow...

podbop, mmmmmmbop.

craig, my fellow foghorn contributer extraordinaire posted about this crazy thing called podbop on donewaiting today so i had to check it out -

it's pretty eff'n cool - you just enter your city into the search bar & they'll tell you the upcoming shows for a week AND give you a couple of mp3's to preview/entice you!!! sweeeeet.

for professional show ho's* like willo & myself, this might not be that useful/novel since we keep our respective show ho calendars pretty up to date - but it's fun timey goodness, nonetheless.

*willo, i think we should make show ho pro business cards to hand out to cute boys at shows...but we have to make sure they understand the usage of the word "ho", 'cause we ain't goin' out like that! youknowwhatimsayin?!?

the honorary title/i'm not that slutty.

so today i found out, on the slut-o-meter (via hez & mai), that "ali watkins" is not slutty at all (2.65%!) but "spangley" is a almost a quarter slut (23.99%)!!! wow, that spangley kinda gets around, huh?!? *wink*

i also love how hez was so upset that she was negative-slut that she tried other names! tee hee.

__________

last night i went to see the honorary title @ bottom of the hill. apparently these guys are popular with the youngsters b/c it was an all ages crowd & all i could see in every direction were giant black x's...this made me feel old. sob.

i missed koufax, but had seen them play w/ kissing tigers last summer (when they did an awesometastic cover of joe jackson's "steppin' out"!!!). limbeck was about halfway through their set when fred to the tizzle rizzle & i got there, but i saw them at that same kissing tigers show as koufax so i wasn't that bummed out. before the show fred & i grabbed a drink at the kilowatt (i had never been!!! wtf?) and then had tasty tapas at some place in the mission whose name escapes me right now....NO, i wasn't drunk. i just wasn't paying attention.

back to the music. so um, yeah, limbeck was pretty solid - they still remind me of the damnwells, but there's nothing wrong with alt.country. the honorary title's lead singer had a sore throat, but he actually sang pretty well regardless...my only complaint was that he was kind of annoying when he sang...and i'm not sure if that was because he was sick, or if that's just his schtick. haha - i rhymed. he seemed too cool for school - but when he talked he was totally normal/tolerable. even a little endearing. weird. their bass player was cute though.. i wish i would've gotten a photo of his cuteness, but alas, i was kinda far away. but trust me, definite cutie.

oh, and while i am all for supportive crowds, there were about 50 (okay, maybe more like 15) girls in the audience who kept singing along to every single word of every single song. even with my earplugs i could hear them louder than the dude sometimes...hi little girls, if i wanted listen to you sing along at the top of your lungs, i would just buy YOUR album instead. oh wait, you don't HAVE an album. yeah, that's what i thought.

damn, i'm a bitch. haha!

*p.s. i like how the damnwells myspace description says "rock/indie/black metal" - w00t w00t!!!

valentine's schmalentines.

it's valentine's day & i'm sick. go figure.

my friend matthew sent me the funniest/cutest interweb valentine's mix tape today & it made me smile...mixtapes are just about the best present this girl could ever get.

it was hilarious! the songs were so weird/funny: "achy breaky heart", "kiss on my list", "i want to know what love is", "i ain' tha 1" (NWA - holla!), "love will tear us apart"...i especially liked the inclusion of the hall & oates b/c they are my second favorite band (next to steely dan of course). haha!

i also decided today that i am in love with andy samberg.

tea. party. like it's 1999.

on this fine sunday before valentine's day, my dearest devon lorraine had a little english tea party at her super-cute pad in sacramento. and it was gloooorius!

les & i drove up to sac this morning and arrived on time. amazing. it was a lovely drive up & we got to catch up as well, since i only see leslie every 3.5 days and even then it's for about 10 minutes in the morning when we're both getting ready for work...poo.

anyway, devon prepared quite a spread for us, including: cucumber sandwiches, scones, mushroom pate and salmon pate, earl grey cookies, crumpets, and of course a variety of teas and the obligatory tea paraphernalia. and dev's friend andrea brought champagne too. oh yeah, baby. it was all super yummy & super fun!

cutie dev & i tea partyin' it up!

devon's new place (well, not THAT new, she's been there a while but we hadn't visited yet) is so cute & i got a bunch of decorating ideas that i'm going to borrow/steal from her. thanks dev! *wink*

tea parties are such a good idea! people should really have them more often.

photos from the tea party adventure.

drag your blanket blindly.

this past thursday willo & i hit the jeff tweedy solo show (w/ wilco drummer glenn kotche as the opener) at the fillmore with willo's friend dan, from cincinnati (ohio represent!), who just happened to be visiting and who also happens to be the biggest wilco fan EVER. (amazingly even more so than myself - quite an achievement!)

let me just begin by saying that i love jeff tweedy. he is, what the kids these days might say, 'da bomb'. and by 'the kids' i mean 'me'. because i don't really think kids use the phrase 'da bomb' that much anymore.

blurry tweedy, courtesy of willo.

i will refrain from gushing too much about the tweedy, but he is so goddamn awesome!!! he played for a solid two hours and honestly it just flew by due to my mesmerization. usually i'm like, okay yay, guy with a guitar, i'm bored after about 24 minutes...but not with j. tweedy. no way. he played a smattering of newish wilco stuff and even some uncle tupelo! allllriiiight. i can't really remember the entire setlist but i DO remember: theologians, a shot in the arm, i'm the man who loves you, she's a jar, i am trying to break your heart, heavy metal drummer, california stars, aaaaaand, ummmmm...yeah my memory isn't as great as it used to be! i DO remember that he played "muzzle of bees", which continued my streak of psychically messaging band/artists to play the song i want to hear most (see also: mark kozelek show last month). and he played "spiders (kidsmoke)" which was really interesting to hear stripped down and without all the kraftwerk-esque embellishments.

so yeah, pretty much the moral of my story is: jeff tweedy RULZ.

aaaanyway, after the show willo, dan, and i hit up the hemlock for an post-show cocktail and to swoon over the hot bartenders there. haha. well, willo & i swooned. sorry dan! all in all, a splendid night indeed! ROCK.

my photos from the night. (no shots of tweedy, left that up to the professional show photog willo!)

i am not being compensated monetarily for the following statement.

however, can i just say that I LOVE JETBLUE!!! holy crap, last wednesday i had to fly down to LA & it was my very first jetblue experience and i am never flying another airline ever again. if i can help it. and can also afford it. hmmmm. whatevers, these are just minor details....

i hate to say it but having a tv to watch during the flight is the best invention ever in airline history. i got to watch the daily show, the colbert report, project runway AND law & order: svu...hi, all of my favorite shows! i love you, jetblue. i love you, jon stewart.

wait, what does jon stewart have to do with jetblue?!? nothing. i just love him. yay.

love.

high school musical....heyyyyy!

thursday night leslie made me watch the disney channel original movie high school musical. okay, well not so much made me watch it as i was in awe of the fact that apparently it was the number one album downloaded on iTunes (a fact which leslie was smart to drop b/c then i was intrigued) and had to see what this was all about....

i won't say anything bad about it b/c of course i'm not the disney channel's target audience...but it was hella cheesy! i kept looking over at les during the movie and giving her "the eye"...i think she knew what i meant. haha.

we both agreed that the mega-downloading of this album shows just who is actually forking out the dough on iTunes...12 year old girls. (more accurately, their parents' credit cards.)

screen shot (courtesy of leslie) to prove it:

split enz reunites!!!

...i have about a million other things to post about that actually pertain to my life BUT i just saw this on donewaiting.com & about pee'd my pants. i LOVE anything & everything that has to do with neil finn. he is a rock god to me. and i realize that makes me a dork but i don't care. the end.

those split enz guys are pretty kooky.
