splish splash.

for some reason, i had a hard time getting to sleep last night and stayed up til 3:00 or so - baaaah! luckily i am working from home today, as i had to get ready to head to russian river for the weekend as part of misty's bachelorette celebration, so i could sleep in a little bit. aaaand, lap swim doesn't start until 10:00 on fridays anway, so it was perfect!

the nice thing about friday lap swim, i found out today, is that hardly anyone goes! whoop! it was just me and one other dude for the majority of the time so we could split the lanes. near the end of my workout another guy showed up & we had to go back to circle swim so i actually cut my set a little short, my patience had run out. haha!

today's set:

240 yd free warm up
3 sets of 120 yd breast/240 yd free (alternating)
5 60 yd free sprint

total: 1620 yards

i also walked home again! it was really nice out & i thought what the heck. *pats self on back*

i only swam twice this week, but that's okay - twice a week is the original goal. plus, extenuating weekend plan circumstances apply this week. and now, time to head out and sit in traffic for the next five hours! gotta love friday in the bay area...

another boring swim post.

it was rough getting up this morning to go to the pool - not for any reason in particular, but i did not want to get out of bed at 6:00 am. and that's why i slept in until 6:30 - ha.

the pool was empty-ish again today - score! it was the dude-formerly-known-as-hot-swimmer-boy (who, really, is more like cute swimmer boy close up. no offense swimmer boy!) and another girl who left about halfway through my workout, so we got to split the lanes which was nice.

today's workout (with conversions; fine, i'll do math):

240 yd free warm up
10 - 60 yd free sprints
5 - 120 yd free
4 - 60 yd breaststroke
120 yd cool down

total: 1800 yds

despite feeling like a zombie on my way to the pool, once i got in & got moving i felt fabulous! and when i was getting out of the pool, the lifeguard stopped me to let me know that he is trying to organize a master's swim club at the pool - and he wanted to know if i would be interested! w00t! pretty sweet.

on my way out of the building i ran into my upstairs neighbor david (or as leslie knows him, basil, hee), who was on his way to work. small freakin' city, i tell ya.

while i was waiting on MUNI i suddenly realized that i did not have my pass - which was def in my back pocket on my way to the pool. awwww crap! i lost it! grrrrr. i looked around on the ground, in my bag, but no - it was gone. it must have fallen out of my back pocket when i went to get my swim script out, and of course being half asleep i failed to notice that. sooooo, i had to walk home the 1.5 miles, of which the first 5 blocks are straight uphill. yeah, not really what i wanted to do after working out. i'm considering it a good enough excuse to take tomorrow off. heh heh.

char char char.

oopsie, i missed a day.

friday afternoon willo & i went to lunch in potrero hill & then she came and worked at the lookout offices with me...i had plans to meet fanny for drinks friday night, which turned into happy hour at hotel biron with both fanny & willo. i can't believe i had never been to hotel biron before! it was super nice, the wine was tasty as was the cheeeeese plate i most definitely needed. mmmmm cheese.

ron saw us check in & met up with us, as well as aram and it turned into a mini-party! after a few drinks & snacks we decided to move on to place pigalle, where ryan, mark, mark's friend daniel who was visiting from florida, and fanny's bf derek met up with us too. w00t! i stayed out a bit later than i had planned on, since i was going to the pool saturday morning, but oh wells - sometimes you have to sacrifice to be fabulous. hee.
__________

despite my evening festivities on friday i managed to get up & go to the pool saturday morning. it was a bit more crowded, i think probably because i went to the 10:00 - noon lap swim time instead of the "i'm crazy and enjoy getting up at 6:30 am" slot. ha.

my workout consisted of:

200 yd free warm-up
10 - 50's alternating breaststroke/free set
5 - 100 yd free set
200 yd free sprint
100 yd free cool down

total: 1800, after the yardage conversion

basically i just flip flopped what i did on thursday...i'm going to have to start getting more creative with my sets or i'll get bored. i might have ben send me some workouts to do, since he's a fancy schmance swim coach & all.

tra la la.

i'm a fish.

second day of my swimming adventure and i'm feeling pretty strong - it's weird, i was talking to ben this morning on my way to work & told him about how i was faster than all the other people in the fast lane today (hot swimmer boy from tuesday was not there, he's way faster than i am for sure) & felt like i was kickin' some ass, and he had to remind me that my definition of slow is probably biased & to stop being such a smarty pants. ha! fair enough.

i will tell you that being the fastest one in my lane certainly appeals to the overacheiver/type A personality part of me. haha.

i also found out today that the pool is 30 yards long - not the standard 25. so this whole time i've been swimming what i think are 50's and 200's and whatnot & they're actually longer! whatevs, i'm just going to pretend that it's 25 yds while i'm swimming and then convert it later. math is hard.

today i swam (in my 25 yd pool assumption):

200 yd freestyle warm up
10 - 50 yd free set
5 - 100 yd alternating breaststroke/free by 100's (3 x breast/2 x free) set
200 yd free "sprint"
100 yd free cool down

total: 1500, but really 1800 b/c of the weird ass pool length.

not bad, eh? i'm sure all of this is very interesting (hech hmmm) but i had to write about something and it might as well be this. plus, if i have to tell the internets what i do then i feel somewhat more accountable/motivated. w00t!

i be up in the (pool) just workin' on my fitness.

some of you may or may not know that i was a competitive swimmer from ages 7 until 18 - yeah, so basically all of my childhood & adolescent life. after my freshman year in college, where i still regularly swam four to five days a week but didn't compete, and the first quarter of my sophomore year when i swam masters with the OSU club team, i pretty much stopped swimming altogether. one might call this burn out. ha. i mean, of course i swam recreationaly - and i taught swim lessons at the summer camp i worked at for two summers in college - but i could not bring myself to swim another freakin' lap to save me, for yeeeeears.

lately i've been feeling super out of shape - i don't run anymore, which i did all the time when i lived in ohio, 'cause it's FLAT and EASY there, unlike SF which is MOUNTAINOUS and EVIL. so basically i have failed to exercise for 2.5 years. yeah, not good! especially since i'm not getting any younger and genetics are scarily close to kicking in.

i am up before 7:00 am, omg.

so, i've decided to start swimming again - prompted by mai's revelation that the SF public pools are both affordable AND not sketchy! whooo hooo! i'm actually really excited about it - today was my first day and i think i did pretty dang well for not having done lap swimming in almost a decade. jess very graciously accompanied me & gave me a ride on her scooter to the north beach pool & it was surprisingly empty and really nice. nicer than a lot of the facilities i grew up swimming at as a youngster! i started off in the slow lap lane b/c i thought i was slow - but apparently not b/c i had to move over to the fast lane (vroooom! omg cheesy) after a few laps! yay me! it's true what they say about muscle memory & all that - it was like second nature & not hard at all, save a little out-of-breathness which i attribute to being cardiovascularly lame right now.

i'm sure my wimpy arms are going to be sore tomorrow & i'm a bit sleepy from getting up so early this morning, but overall i feel great and am looking forward to my next session. yippee!
