bros before ho's, it's a rule, read the guidelines.

emily haines is my favorite. why do the canadians have such cutie pie rock chicks (see also: feist)?

last friday willo, ryan and i went to the emily haines & the soft skeleton show at du nord, where we also ran into sharon & ian and mai! yay. i purposely went into the show without having listened to any of emily's solo stuff as a sort of experiment in my affection for her musical abilities - i wanted it to be a surprise! wheee!!! exciting!

when willo & i got there, they had the actual stage/standing area closed...and for some reason people started lining up in front of the curtain, until the line stretched back to the pool tables! wtf, right? this is a rock show, not the day after christmas sale at macy's (which i still would not line up for, despite my passion for the fashion), okay?!?

but, like lemmings, we decided that maybe we should wait in line too? because obvs these people were so anal that they might throw down if we tried to squeeze in front of them later on. LAME. so after about 20 mins, they lifted the velvet curtain and allowed us into the room and honestly, once everyone "claimed" their spots, we were like, eight people deep. that's it. duh.

she rocks.

after waiting another half an hour for the band to come out, i was ready to rock (or gently sway, as it were). she played the album in it's entirety and straight through (which i only realized after actually getting the album) - i was diggin' the more upbeat songs but the more mellow ones made me sleeeeepy. this could've definitely been a sit down show - not that it's a bad thing - but there was no need to be standing and rocking out, is alls i'm sayin'.

ms. haines voice is so magical. she's like a little fairy sprite of a lady with such an amazing, restrained vocal delivery. but that's a good thing. unlike feist, who belts it out - and that works for her, trust me - emily's style is more like that of a whisper - delicate, soothing, inviting - drawing you in closer and making you pay attention to her lyrics. ryan & i both commented that we didn't realize how truly talented she is as a songwriter until we saw her in this context. plus, she's so awesomely weird/quirky/cute. at one point, she was like "hello san francisco, thank you for not being los angeles" and i wanted to hug her. she gets us. we're like this (insert eye to eye motion here).

i've been listening to the album for past two days and i'm steadily falling in like with it - it's not love, yet, but it could be. ;)

I'm all for sit-down shows... Ministry, believe it or not, should have been a sit-down show. Their rhythms and beats made me feel like I was back in the womb. Safe, secure, sleepy...
