i got a date with the night.
john patterson is my hero. we had almost given up hope on getting tickets to the sold out yeah yeah yeahs show last night at bimbo's and then john, aka totally awesome honorary show ho, scored two tickets (@ face value no less!) at the last minute. because he rules. awwww yeah!
i had only seen the YYYs once before @ an acoustic in-studio performance at the CD101 "big room" in the 'bus about two years ago - that was nice and all, and i got to meet the band & see how incredibly tiny & shy karen o is - but i wanted to see them rock out!
opening band the gris gris was pretty interesting, and i'd wanted to check them out for a while upon a few glowing recommendations. they were loud - but i dug 'em and will probably check them out again at my earliest convenience. they were kind of a weird combination of neopsychedelic noise rock & garage. i guess that's not that weird of a combo, but it was highly entertaining & engaging nonetheless. the dudes are definitely fans of the ultra-layered crescendo & reverb freak out. their bass player kicked ass. actually, they all kicked ass. and i liked the vocalist/guitarist's moustache - i wish i could've taken a photo of it b/c it was quite magnificent. misty would've gagged - haha!!!
during the gris gris's set, john pointed out that nick zinner was standing next to us - i was too self-conscious to really give it a good look (hello rock star, i'm staring at you!), but from what i caught in my 3 second glance, i'm pretty sure it was him too. he's a tiny man. with very large hair.
so, the yeah yeah yeahs totally rocked it! karen o is such a spectacular front woman - she's a gold foil bodysuit-encased ball of energy & smiles and rawkactular fantasticness. i heart her. i just want to give her a big hug and thank her for being so friggin' cool. her voice was really strong, which i think is sometimes easy to forget when you listen to the albums - it's pretty difficult to make your voice cut through all that noise live, y'know? she totally rules. did i mention that i love her?!?

karen o!
my photos are pretty crappy b/c for the majority of the show i couldn't see poo. there were a bunch of annoying drunk people standing in front of me, oblivious to the fact that a tiny girl was standing behind them & couldn't see. and not one, but TWO of them had bushy hair. ewww. i don't know about you, but when i'm at a show, and i can feel that someone is basically standing thisclose to me, all up in my business, i tend to shift around so that we're not simulating siamese twin-ness. but, y'know, maybe that's just me.
i got a few shots (all blurry) in the 12 seconds that i had a clear view of the stage...and two of the annoying girls actually left during the encore, so that was a relief. i kept telling myself to just enjoy the music and ignore the stupid crowd. it worked most of the time. haha.
