my favorite musical things, 2005 edition.
inspired by misty, here are the cosas musicales that i adored in the year that was 2005:
* "kissing families" - silversun pickups; oh my sweet jebsus, this song is so rawktacular! i still cannot stop listening to it - so addictive. muchos gracias to ted for including it on one of his BaGEL radio comps, b/c i cannot imagine a world in which i did not hear this song & stand in awe of it's glory!
* tapes 'n tapes; willo & i might be the presidents of their fan club! listen to them now. doooo it!
* the national - alligator; the finest album of 2005, in my humble option. not to mention one of the best rock shows i saw last year - matt berringer kicks some major ass & also writes some really weird lyrics (um, hello - "i'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls"????) . whatevs, me likey!
* my morning jacket @ the fillmore; this show was so freakin' awesome that i didn't come down from my musical high for about three days afterward. faeries, goblins, olde timey victorian costumes, a magical, mystical forest onstage and jim james' otherwordly wail = good times. "off the record" is brilliant. they were in a cameron crowe *aka my musical hero* movie (even if it wasn't that good). i am in love w/ these kentucky boys.
* meeting ben gibbard; hi, so totally dorky of me, but it's freakin BEN GIBBARD, okay?!? i don't usually get starstruck, but this is the man responsible for many of my favorite albums of the past 3.5 years. now, to get them to make another postal service record!!!
* broken social scene/feist @ the grand ballroom; 13 musicians on stage at once, leslie feist lending her crazy vocal talents to a big ol' chunk of the set, kevin drew is hot, okay?!?, horn section!, freaky princess leah-style hair, i love canada.
* speaking of feist, i have but one word for you: MUSHABOOM.
* hijack the disco, birdmonster, scissors for lefty: three of the most rockingest bands in the bay area.
* spoon. kicks ass. in general. gimme fiction remained true to form (and landed at a solid #4 on my year end list), and this was my very first show @ the fillmore. ever. could a girl ask for more?
* amerie - "1 thing"; this song rocks my world. and my booty. it's my JAM, yo!!!
* rogue wave - descended like vultures; this is indie pop as it's meant to be done - the shins better watch out, their "little brothers" are about to change your life. heh heh.
* donewaiting.com; bob duffy rules the interweb when it comes to music weblogs. and i'm not just saying that because i write for them. *wink*
* dolly parton at the hardly strictly bluegrass festival; hello, she's a goddess. and this was FREE! and she wore a blue sparkly, and maybe even what some would call spangley, outfit! oh heck yeah!
* calexico/iron & wine @ the warfield; this show literally gave me chills. wow.
* gorillaz - "DARE"; cartoon dance rock at it's finest. and shaun ryder comes back from the dead? a happy monday indeed!
* rock star INXS; even though i hated this show, i couldn't stop watching!!! and even though i hate the new singer (how can you replace a frontman like michael hutchence?!?!), i have been known to watch the video for "pretty vegas". but they had dave navarro on that show! come on, it's dave navarro! in a boa! giving rock star advice!!! i'd take it.
* KELLY CLARKSON IS MY HERO. I HEART = HER.
* BaGEL radio & dj teb leibowitz; fighting the good fight in the name of indie rock noise pop! and also just happens to be the nicest guy i know!!!
* my awesometatic show ho buddies (misty, hez, ted, john, eric) - and most of all the original "show ho pro" & my partner in crime willo!
* and last but not least, and i think this can count as a favorite musical thing in '05 - MY JOB! yaaaaaaay for rock 'n roll music!

Sigh. We're bonding over Trash Reality TV (TRTV). I actually LOVED Rockstar INXS. The next time you see JoJo ask him to do his Tim impersonation. Heh. I actually saw the INXS video of Pretty Vegas the other day. JD is so hot but alas, you just know he is going to "weird out" as an offical rockstar.
Actually I want to make that RTTV, reality trash TV>
yeah - JD is kinda weird already. and being an "official" rockstar will only encourage his ecentricities! he's cute in the face, but too skinny. i like slim, but near-emaciation is not cute to me! but i like that he has tattoos - always a plus!
heh. i can't believe i just wrote a whole paragraph about rock star: INXS!
