hijack the heavenly nada surf & say hi to your mom.

okie doke, i have to review the heavenly states/hijack the disco/the ebb & flow show for playing in fog so i won't go into much detail here - as to not squander any of my genius (?!?) on my own blog - but i will say that hijack sounded SO SOOOO GREAT & i was extra proud of them - they just finished tracking stuff for their new EP (i think it's an EP, maybe it's a full-length, i'll have to clarify) and they sounded really tightened up & sharp. love them. luv. but i'm pissed at them too for making the bass line of one of their songs play on repeat in my noggin since thursday night. grrrrrr. ;)

*clarification via trevor - they have not yet started recording a full-length, but have finished pre-production.

it was such a funtastical night all-around - before the show i met willo, misty, hez, and derek at bissap baobab for dinner - YUM. i hadn't seen hez or misty in weeks & i missed them! and i ended up knowing five gazillion peeps at the show too - zach, david, & peter from birdmonster, ted, john, mat with one t, daz, etc. etc. good times.

friday's nada surf/say hi to your mom show was freakin' rawktacular too - i would have to say that nada surf is THE band that i've been meaning to see for the last two years but they never really played anywhere near me when i was living in the 'bus - let go is one of those albums that absolutely defines a certain period of my life & i love every single track & will probably still be playing it on a semi-monthly basis for the next 20 years. i don't have their new album yet (oops!), but will be procurring it someway, somehow very soon. i promise, nada surf! please don't de-fan me!

so anyway, i was super-psyched to finally see them. i noticed two things during the show:

1) matthew caws is smaller that i had imagined. not super-tiny, just shorter & littler.

2) i hate white boy dreads. they are ugly. if you are thinking about growing dreads & you are white, and especially if you are blonde, please rethink it. if you have white boy dreads, please cut them off! that means you, mr. bass player daniel lorca.

so, enough with the aesthetics! i was so stoked that the band played almost every track off of let go and i could sing along! yay! for the majority of the set willo & i were up front like the rock champions that we are, but then we met up w/ w's friend eric & his friend oscar closer to the back for the rest of the show. and as much as i love being in close proximity to the stage at shows, due to my shorter stature, the bass was soooo loud that it was kind of a relief to take a step back for a bit. even with my earplugs sometimes the bass was a little too much.

not that i don't love the bass, hello, but my only complaint from the whole show has to do with the dreaded (literally) bass player. while matthew caws seemed rather humble & enjoyable to watch, d.lorca was kind of annoying actually. for starters, uh, the dreads. but even more than that, was that he seemed really full of himself. like, on the not attractive side of cocky. plus, he smoked about a thousand cigarettes while playing & singing and that is just stupid. and dumb looking. and smoking is gross. but i'm sure he's a very nice guy, so i'll shut up now.

so, other than that very minor, very personal complaint - the show was awesome!!! oh, and say hi to your mom was groovy as well. i'm going to have to give their stuff a higher priority in my vast cue of 'stuff to listen to'. the end.
