poor, neglected blog.

(and thus begins the post-a-palooza...)

hot shit! i've been so busy with my fabulous life that i have been, very apologetically, neglecting to post about the aforementioned fabulousity that has ensued. i shall aspire to brevity henceforth, but i'm guessing that won't happen. because i am very verbose, that's why.

ahhhh, let's see. where to begin? i've been to a good amount of shows over the past few weeks (shocking, i know) so let's start there. i'll play that fun game where i recap each show in three five (okay, ten???) sentences or less. awwwww yeah! you know you love it...and off we gooooooo!

15 january - the helio sequence/the can't see/black fiction @ the rickshaw

i missed black fiction but the willster said they were good & bought their cd, so i will check them out. the can't see were just okay. the helio sequence RULED and benjamin weikel is a freakin' KICK ASS drummer & willo remarked that brandon summers sometimes sounds like neil finn (crowded house, split enz, the finn brothers), whom we both adore, & i think he plays guitar like my dearest cross-country road trip companion, bimb barbie.

18 january - mark kozelek/matt costa @ great american music hall

lyne went to this with me because, like yours truly, she is an uber-red house painters/sun kil moon/m.kozelek fan...gooooo lyne! matt costa was really good, he played a pretty varied set & changed his songs up quite a bit which made it way more interesting to watch/listen to. on a side note, he is also not too hard on the olde eyes, ifyouknowwhatimean. hee hee. i saw him after the show and gave him a pat on the shoulder and a "good set!". lyne wanted to hump him, but that's a different matter. mark kozelek was faaaabulous (just as i had anticipated) and was actually quite funny - much to my surprise. i thought he'd be all dour & depressed & gruff, but he made jokes! that were funny! wheee! AND thank god he played "carry me ohio" or my psychic link to the band/artist onstage that makes them play my favorite song streak would have been broken. plus, i made lyne stay until the very end, even though she was reeeeally tired (it was the last song of the encore), because i told her if i left & he played it i'd never forgive myself. thanks for pulling through for me there, m. kozelek!

19 january - editors @ popscene

okay, so this was my first popscene experience. and i've never felt older in my entire life...nor have i been colder while waiting in line for almost 2 godforsaken hours to get in. willo & i showed up at 9:30ish to get in line, and mai met up with us there, AND we met some spanish dude named vincenzo or vincente or something while we were waiting. hello, random! anyway, editors were, quite honestly, kind of underwhelming for me. i mean, they are tight & together and definitely know how to play and sound good - but i just wasn't blown away by them. call me crazy - maybe i'm getting old or something. i dunno. oh, and the guitarist looked like he had not seen daylight in about 4 1/2 months. he kind of scared me.

21 january - the elected/minipop @ bottom of the hill

there was another band that played before minipop, but i can't remember their name. and they were like, a dub band. which normally i wouldn't mind, b/c this girl has been known to rock the dub - but yeah. i wasn't really diggin' it. when i got to BoTH, misty & ted were already there, and then jem came, and willo, so the whole two live crew was present and ready to rock. misty warned me that blake (yeah, i just called him "blake" like he was my bff! haha!) had a moustache, but i was even more shocked when i actually saw the moustache in question AND that he had a BERET on too. *gulp* i commented that maybe wearing the beret w/ moustache combo was an LA thing or something - i hope.

show ho's UNITE!!!

both the elected and minipop were solid - but they both took for-friggin-ever to set up which was kind of a drag. because i had to work all day and wasn't too keen on standing up for an additional 45 mins per band in between sets. and the mostly-young crowd made me feel old for the second friggin time in three days. giant black x's on hands abound!!!

sidenote: every time i see blake sennett all i can think about is that nickelodeon show that he was on back in the early 90's called "salute your shorts". no one knew what i was talking about on saturday night and i started to doubt myself, but then i googled it and apparently he went by blake soper or something when he was on the show. aaaanyway, it was about a summer camp called 'Camp Anawana', and had characters named 'donkeylips' and 'ug' and there was this one "rebel" character, bobby budnick, who was obsessed w/ steve vai & had a necklace that was made out of a steve vai guitar pick...and believe it or not, that's how i found out who steve vai was! haha - thanks nickelodeon!!! i can't believe i just remembered all of that. dork! and now back to my regularly schedule blogpost...

24 january - WILLIE EFF'N NELSON, THE MAN HIMSELF @ the fillmore

what can i even begin to say about this show?!?! i have been waiting 26.7 long years to see the one & only red-headed stranger in real life, up close and personal-like, and it was a truly magical experience. and i wasn't even on drugs! haha - w00t w00t! (which, by the way, is more than i can say for the three (3) seperate passing-out-and-needing-medical-attention incidents that happened right in front of us at the show - dang people, have you heard of pacing yourself?!? sheesh.) misty, natalie, and buzz met me @ the fillmore and we walked in only two songs into the set - score! willie played for a solid 2 hours or so and the man never stopped the entire time. how is that even possible? he's like five billion years old!!! i have concluded that he is an alien. or a vampire. either way - WILLIE RULES!!!!!

p.s. misty bought a horrific willie faux-two-shirts-in-one (short sleeve on top of long sleeve???) tshirt that i'm making her turn into a pillow. the end.

25 january - lake trout/benzos/send for help @ the independent

ted, misty, willo, and i carpooled over to oakland for trevizzle's surprise "dirty 30" birthday party (which was both surprising and fabulous) and then trucked it back over to catch lake trout later that night. when we approached the independent we were nervous - why were there so many hippies? did we miss the memo? should i run home & get my patchouli so we can "blend in" with the crowd? apparently lake trout has a jam band following* that we indie rockers were not privy to - huh. interesting. i should've guessed this when i noticed that the bass player was not wearing shoes. anyway, we missed send for help, but benzos (from brooklyn, i think) grew on me as their set progressed and lake trout was kick ass! ted & misty left about halfway through their set to go see scott NBF's band at another bar down the street - but willo & i stayed behind to continue rawking out. and so willo could crush on the lead singer. heh heh. i thoroughly enjoyed them - they even had a (hopefully ironic) smoke machine - ooooooh! fancy!

*not that i have anything against hippies - some of my best friends are hippies! i swear. (sorry misty, it's true.) and i have been called such hippiesque things as windippie or yuppie-hippie/indie-hippie before. so yeah.

.........................

thursday night i was supposed to go to bottom of the hill to see film school, but i pooped out. being fabulous is tiring! friday night i had planned on going to the hemlock to see the moggs b/c apparently they have a friggin' kick ass girl drummer that misty looooves, but again, i decided to stay home & watch "#1 single" and commisserate w/ lisa loeb about how hard it is to be a single lady in the 21st century. *sigh*

more updates soon....i have to get away from this godforsaken computer! ahhhhhh!!!!
