my favorite song(s): part one.

i'm always creating lists in my head (see below) & have been trying to compile a list of my favorite all-time most kick ass & awesometastic songs of forever & ever for a while...but i always forget to write them down. and then they're lost, until i hear them again and the whole vicious cycle starts over again. bah!

so instead of making one big list, i think i'm just going to do one song at a time. here is installment numero uno...

bruce springsteen - "i'm on fire"

for starters, the steady, almost locomotive rhythm of this song is so seductive. the organ at the intro (& throughout the song) and the gentle finger-picking of the guitar meld seamlessly with the unrelenting drum track. and springsteen's hushed vocals only rise above a mumbled whisper for the howling "oooh ooh ooohs". this dude is in paaaaain.

alot of people think that some the lyrics are kind of creepy, but i don't think they're meant to be taken literally. and one of the best heartachey lines in any song has to be:

"sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy & dull
and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my soul."

damn. who hasn't felt that way? if you're raising your hand right now YOU HAVE NO SOUL. haha.

of course there is a indescribable reason as to why i love this song...i just melt when i hear it. and it has nothing to do w/ the technical aspects or the lyrical content. i just love this song. and isn't that as good of a reason as any?
