different names for the same thing.

this past friday night, the gang (me, ben, jess, alice, cam, teddyG) and i made the trek ALL THE WAY over to berkeley to see the death cab for cutie/spoon/mates of state show at the greek. hey, that's a quite a feat for us city dwellers, mmmkay?

the show crew (minus alice, 'cause she's the photographer)!

we got there a little later than we had wanted to *ahem. cam.* but we still scored some pretty good seats, despite the fact that we were a wee bit farther away from the stage than i'm used to. hey, i'm a professional show ho. i ain't sayin'....in any event, we secured our spot just in time to see mates of state. HI, CUTENESS. this was the third time i had seen them this year (and actually my third time total) - i never get sick of their complete and total fabulousity. omg, sooooo good. of course they played their "hits" ("goods (all day)" ROCKED!) and they also did a cover of gnarls barkeley's "crazy" in the middle of "like you crazy" - which i had heard before on the internets, but which was also waaaaay better live. oh, those crazy married kids and their shenanigans! love them.

spoon was up next - hello (one of my) top five favorite band(s) ever! awwwww yeah. they are so eff'n rawktastical. but i will have to agree with the lady that was in line with me in the bathroom (and alice) that they are much better in a smaller venue. and also, you just know that a good 80% (i'm probably underestimating that) of the crowd was there just to see death cab and could've cared less about MoS or spoon. stupid people. stupid stupid! whatever, spoon still rocked. like always. i am ready for a new album now boys - ah thank ya.

oh - i must interject here how amazed i was with the fabulousness of the greek. such a cool venue! even if it is semi-big, i don't think there are really any bad seats in the whole joint. and the setting is really pretty and magical and it's nice to see a show outside where you aren't sweating to death (coachella, comfest) or have to watch the stage from a giant monitor (shoreline). okay, back to the rock...

i made a quick run for the bathroom - argggh, stupid bladder - but made it back *just* as death cab was taking the stage. WORD! yay! these guys are such performers - all doing the moon walk (haha - right, misty? can i get a walla?) and flailing themselves all over the stage and bouncing, bouncing, bouncing along to the beat and just being generally engaging and having FUN. well, at least it looks like they're having fun. and they have totally beefed up their light show and stage dressing and normally i would be like "ugh, sell outs" but i won't because a) i loves me some DCFC and b) it wasn't super cheesy. and the whole night i was like "please play 'marching bands of manhattan' now bitches" and they wouldn't and was like "wtf dudes? why you gotta hate?" but then they finally played it - the very. last. song. and i was all happy and i loved them again. w00t!

note: jess makes a good seat on BART, in the event you don't have one. hee.

it was also ben gibbard's 30th birthday, and some people (heck, hmm, cam. jess.) thought it would be a good idea to try to get the crowd to sing him happy birthday, but wave style - like we'd start and then everyone else would join in. of course they would! duh! why wouldn't they - don't they know who we ARE?!? but alas, it didn't work. and we just sounded like drunkle fools singing out of tune. oh well. good times.

*footnote: the only bad part of the night - i don't like sitting at shows. may it never happen again. amen.

after the show we hit up the lone palm for a few drinks and misty & ted met up with us and i got to give misty the awesome korean notepad that willo & i got for her earlier in the day that had a giant pancake on the front of it - with sunglasses - and said things like "can you hear...the sound of excitement?" and "can you hear...the sound of the future?" oh, those crazy asians. gotta love 'em. *for the record, i really do love the asians. i live with one. just to clarify - i'm down with the asians. thank you.

for some reason, after we left the lone palm, jess, ben, cam, and i decided that it was a good idea to get pizza and have an afterparty-pizzaparty at my house. really, we sort of kidnapped cam and made him come with us b/c he was already in the cab and he is easily manipulated (sorry cam, it's true). our pizza mission was a trying one though - and jess had to use her lawyery skills to score us a measily four slices from the stupid pizza pino place around the corner from my house b/c they were mean to us and wouldn't let us order. wtf? way to go jess though - she even got me a slice of veggie! awwwww.

i tried to stay up to catch the repeat of josh on conan (see previous post) but i fell asleep promptly after eating my pizza. laying on the arm of my couch. my neck still hurts. oww.
