save *real* radio!

i'm sure many of you are already aware of this, but just in case you're not, i'm spreading the word on this here blog too...

if you're reading this there's a good chance that you also listen to internet radio at least once in a while - and embrace all that is good & wonderful about it. variety, choice, personality, independence, freedom from the long arm of advertising - all of these things are what make internet radio stations worth listening to and worth saving! the people behind internet radio stations are not in it for the money, they're not making a profit, and they don't deserve to be shut down.

remember when you were a kid and taped songs off of the radio? you know you did it! you perfected your timing in making sure that verbose DJ didn't cut into your pristine duplication of "pour some sugar on me". you sat by the stereo for hours hoping to hear your favorite song and capture it in all it's glory. and did the goverment step in and tell terrestrial radio stations that they had to pay a ludicrous, unattainable, and unreasonable amount in royalties for those songs? uh, no. there are a plethora of honest, invested music lovers out there who don't abuse internet radio station streams and who instead use them as a research tool to actually GO OUT AND BUY music!
i cannot tell you how much of my music library is directly influenced by internet radio stations such as BAGeL Radio, soma fm, WOXY, and KEXP. in fact, today i went into my emusic account and downloaded three bands that i heard only moments beforehand. it's impulse buying like this that the recording industry (yes, which i am a part of) should be thanking internet radio for instead of punishing!

anyway, rant over - please sign this petition and/or write your congressman or congresswoman and help us save internet radio! do it for the kids! THE KIDS!

Thanks for alerting me to this (tragically preposterous) issue. I hadn't heard anything about it!

I checked to see what they were saying over at the Pandora blog, and they pointed me to another petition, set up by some of the Internet stations themselves. Couldn't hurt to sign both.
